Smog Check

All vehicles barring the diesel-powered models made before 1997 are subject to biennial smog inspection in order to renew the registration. The 6 year or older rule doesn’t apply to 1998 diesel-powered models and newer carrying a GVWR rating 14K pounds along with specially designed vehicle models during or after 1976 require smog inspection along with non-resident vehicles. The Six-year or fewer model years old rule doesn’t apply to these vehicles.

Smog Check Exemptions

The other types of vehicles that do not require to be inspected include electric and natural gas-fueled vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight over 14K lbs. Gasoline-fueled vehicles constructed in or before 1976, motorcycles and trailers also don’t require smog inspection.

If you have moved into California from a different state and hold a smog certificate from your previous state, you still need to have your vehicle undergo the biennial smog inspection.

Also note that vehicles that are four years or older do not require a smog certification. However, owners of diesel-fueled vehicles are not exempt from this rule. If you have any question related to smog exempted Vehicles visit smog hut star station website

Requirements

A new owner will have to pay a smog certification fee. Owners of vehicles models six years or less model years old will need to pay annual smog abatement fee of $20 (for the first 6 years of registration) instead of having to obtain a smog certification. This fee doesn’t apply to the list of vehicles exempt from the six year or less year model old rule previously mentioned in this article.

Note that the inspection can be conducted only in DMV-approved locations and you might need to get your vehicle smog checked in every 2 years. Your registration renewal notice will be mailed to you when it’s time for smog inspection.

The California residents will have to bring their vehicle to the DMV-certified inspection venue for smog check before registering their vehicles. You will need this smog inspection certificate at the time of registering your vehicle.

Once your car successfully undergoes the initial smog inspection , it will be subject to re-certification in every 2 years as we mentioned earlier. New California should also remember that Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is required when you register your car for the first time after moving to the state.

You do not need to have to your car checked for safety to get a smog certificate. Out-of-state vehicles only have to have a VIN when they go for registration.
